Inside one of Europe’s biggest MTB marathon weekends.
Salzkammergut Trophy 2026 turned Bad Goisern into a mountain-bike city, then sent Course D into 57.7 kilometres of Alpine climbing, fast gravel, forest trail, heat, and rain.
I returned after 14th in M30 with a Top-10 target and finished exactly 10th. The full video below follows the race and the wider weekend, including media access and my first helicopter flight.

Opening note
A start line inside a much bigger mountain-bike festival.
Course D is one race inside a weekend of routes, riders, media, and local effort. The start photo shows the competition; the video and report reveal the event around it.
Arrival
Bad Goisern becomes a bike town before anyone crosses the start line.
Salzkammergut Trophy weekend starts before the race. Bikes appear on balconies, vans fill the side streets, and every café conversation seems to turn toward tyre choice, weather, or the next morning.
Bad Goisern does not merely host the event. For a few days, the town works around it. Riders move between registration, accommodation, start areas, and shops as if the whole place were one large paddock.
Inside my room, the scale became smaller again. The bike needed attention, race kit needed order, batteries needed charging, and every item had to be ready before the alarm made decisions harder.
I was also carrying more camera equipment than on a normal XCM weekend. The goal was not only to race Course D, but to make a Salzkammergut Trophy video that showed why this event feels so large.
A different view
A media pass and a first helicopter flight revealed the machinery behind the race.
The media pass opened doors that race numbers normally do not. I could speak with organizers about the Trophy’s history and see how many moving parts are needed before thousands of riders can have one clear route.
Their work stretches far beyond a start arch. Course teams, safety crews, timing, transport, feed zones, communications, and local partners must all operate across terrain that is beautiful precisely because it is difficult to access.
Then came a first for me: seeing the event from a helicopter. The valley widened, the towns became small, and the race routes stopped looking like lines on a map and started looking like a regional network.
From above, the Salzkammergut Trophy’s reputation made immediate sense. This is not one crowded field moving around a park. It is a mountain-bike festival spread across serious Alpine ground.
That perspective sits at the center of my YouTube film. The onboard racing matters, but the helicopter footage and organizer access show the scale that a handlebar camera can never capture on its own.
Course D
The all-mountain course is compact enough to attack and hard enough to punish impatience.
Course D is officially 57.7 kilometres with 2,114 metres of climbing. The terrain mix is 19.6% tarmac, 60.4% gravel, and 20% trail, with a level-four difficulty rating from the organizer.
Those statistics describe the surface, but not the rhythm. The first major climb lifts the race from roughly 500 metres to almost 1,400 metres, forcing a long decision about pace before halfway.
Later climbs are smaller only on the profile. They arrive after fatigue has settled into the legs, when each acceleration costs more and every descent demands enough focus to protect speed without wasting energy.
I finished 14th in M30 the previous year. Returning with a Top-10 category target made the race simple to define and harder to execute: improve four places without turning the opening hour into a gamble.
Race execution
The opening is fast, the groups split early, and patience becomes a competitive skill.
At noon, Course D leaves with more urgency than its distance suggests. Position matters before the road narrows, and the cost of missing a useful group can be greater than a short effort made to stay connected.
The first minutes demanded commitment, but the long climb demanded restraint. I wanted to race forward without crossing the line that turns controlled pressure into a debt collected two hours later.
The descents changed the rhythm rather than offering complete recovery. They lowered the power, yet still asked for decisions: where to brake, when to pass, and how much risk was justified for a few seconds.
By the final third, the race was no longer about finding fresh speed. It was about keeping the existing speed organized while fatigue tried to make power, line choice, and fueling less precise.
The race-window data reflects that variability: 177 W average power, 218 W weighted power, 166 bpm average heart rate, and 193 bpm maximum heart rate across the official 3:47:08.
Four seasons in one race
Heat, rain, cold, and mud turned a difficult profile into a moving problem.
The temperature trace ranged from 17°C to 33°C, but even that spread understates the experience. Early heat pushed cooling and hydration forward; later rain changed grip, visibility, and comfort within minutes.
Once the downpour arrived, the body went from overheating to losing warmth. Wet clothing, wind on the descents, and mud from the trail made the same power output feel like a different kind of effort.
A GPX elevation profile can show where the next climb begins. It cannot show when rain turns dust into spray, when hands cool on a descent, or when a familiar line suddenly asks for another correction.
That is why the race video belongs near the top of this report. Moving images carry the weather, noise, speed, and surface changes that route statistics flatten into a clean chart.
Back to Bad Goisern
A Top-10 result mattered, but the finish explained why the Trophy earns return visits.
The route eventually folds back toward Bad Goisern, and the race noise returns before the finish is visible. After hours in the mountains, barriers, voices, and the announcer make the last metres feel unusually concentrated.
I crossed the line in 3:47:08: 10th in M30 and 34th overall. The target was achieved exactly, four category places better than the previous year and with enough control to race the final part rather than survive it.
There was still the practical post-race sequence: bike wash, wet kit, food, and the slow inventory of what had worked. Pasta started recovery; conversations filled in the parts of the race I had not seen.
Salzkammergut Trophy 2026 gave me the result I came for and a much larger film than expected. The race was the spine, but Bad Goisern, the organizers, the helicopter, and the weather made the story.
That is the real reason to return. Course D is hard enough to measure progress, while the event around it offers something data cannot: the feeling of joining one of Europe’s defining MTB marathon weekends.
